Interactive Climate Risk Intelligence Platform

Developing an interactive web platform enabling users to explore hazards, compare destinations, evaluate resilience indicators, and access downloadable reports supporting evidence-based tourism planning.

Tourism Climate Risk Shift Mapping

Developed a novel tourism climate risk mapping framework that identifies locations where climate hazards are already affecting destination viability and visitor experience. The analysis combines heat, cold, precipitation, and drought impacts into a tourism-focused risk matrix, highlighting emerging climate hotspots and regional shifts in tourism suitability.

Risklayer partnered with the Travel Forward and CELTH to develop the Destination Climate RiskScan for National Tourism Administrations (NTAs) for the European Travel Commission (ETC). The initiative delivers national and sub-national tourism climate risk profiles through an interactive online platform, allowing destinations to identify emerging climate hotspots, benchmark resilience, compare risks across regions, and prioritize adaptation investments. By combining climate science, tourism exposure analytics, and resilience indicators, the project enables evidence-based climate adaptation planning for the European visitor economy.

Project Highlights

  • National Tourism Climate Risk Profiles: Developed tourism-specific climate risk assessments at national and regional scales, evaluating exposure to heat, wildfire, flooding, drought, snow loss, and transition risks associated with the net-zero transition.
  • Tourism Exposure & Vulnerability Assessment: Integrated natural, built, and intangible tourism assets with infrastructure, economic, safety, insurability, investment, and market-demand indicators to assess destination vulnerability.
  • Climate Risk Shift Analysis: Applied novel tourism-specific climate risk mapping to identify emerging climate hotspots and changing tourism suitability under future climate scenarios, supporting long-term adaptation planning.
  • Resilience Planning & Capacity Building: Combined quantitative risk assessment with training, stakeholder workshops, scenario planning, and resilience roadmap development to support implementation.
