Using data-based modelling to quantify the prevalence and economic impact of Long COVID and ME/CFS in Germany between 2020 and 2024
In collaboration with the ME/CFS Research Foundation, Risklayer has developed a first-of-its-kind data model to estimate the prevalence and economic impact of Long COVID and ME/CFS in Germany. This groundbreaking analysis provides the most comprehensive picture to date of how these two conditions have evolved over the period from 2020 to 2024—affecting more than 1.5 million people in 2024 alone and resulting in combined costs exceeding €250 billion. The study, unveiled on May 12, 2025 at the ME/CFS Symposium 2025in Berlin, integrates corrected COVID-19 infection data with scientific assumptions from current literature to estimate disease prevalence, progression, and the wide-ranging socio-economic consequences.
Risklayer led the data-based modelling work, applying its expertise in risk analytics and crisis impact modelling to quantify the societal burden of these two chronic conditions. Building on our previous work during the COVID-19 pandemic and our broader experience in disaster risk and health impact modelling, this project reflects our mission to provide data-driven insights that support public policy, healthcare planning, and investment in medical research. The findings are intended to inform long-overdue national discussions and interventions.
